About Us

Buhler Chrysler Jeep on Route 35 in Hazlet was started as a Hudson Franchise 79 years ago, by two cab drivers. Don Buhler, President of Buhler Auto Group stated "Hudson made an excellent automobile".

Buhler & Bitter was located at the corner of Broad and Third Streets in Keyport and was operated by Don Buhler's grandfather, Mr. George Buhler and his fellow cabbie from New York, Mr. Carl Bitter.

It was a fortunate location for the auto dealership, because Keyport Harbor played an active role in the transport of illegal liquor during prohibition. The business flourished mainly because the Hudson was a big car with lots of hiding places.

Booming business enabled the dealership to become the first Bayshore Dealership to have a Highway Showroom. The Route 35 building was built in 1927 for Buhler & Bitter.

The fast growing business suffered a massive slow down when the stock market crashed in 1929 and the subsequent depression forced Buhler & Bitter to sell its new building and move back to Third and Broad Streets.

Buhler & Bitter survived the depression and after World War II were still selling Hudsons. It was during this time that Bob Buhler, Don's father, joined the business.

In 1954, Hudson merged with Nash Motor Company which became American Motors. On one within the dealership approved f the merger and in 1955 dropped Hudson and went to DeSoto and Plymouth.

Chrysler dropped DeSoto in 1961, as a result only Plymouths were sold from 1961 to 1967 when the dealership added Chrysler to its offerings.

In 1968 the dealership added Chrysler to its offerings and built the building where they are currently housed on Route 35 in Hazlet, the former site of the Fireman's Fairgrounds. From 1971 to 1977, they housed Jaguar and British Leyland Motors at this location.

Don Buhler joined the dealership in 1969 and just like his father before him, he started out in the shop and worked his way up through each department.

In 1987, Red Bank Dodge was acquired and the name changed to Buhler Dodge. The dealership, located on Newman Springs Road was a grand success.

In the 90's, Chrysler Corporation was trying to marry up Chrysler Plymouth Dealers with Jeep so in 1995 Buhler acquired the Jeep franchise and since have grown to one of the largest Chrysler/Jeep dealers in Central New Jersey. Also in 1991 the fourth generation came on board by way of Darren Buhler, who also started in the shop and worked his way through each department and phase of the dealership and is the General Manager at Buhler Auto Superstore today. Don's Son-In-Law, Garry Foltz joined the business in 1996 and is currently the General Manager of Buhler & Bitter, the Chrysler and Jeep dealership located in Hazlet, New Jersey.

In 2002, one more change came about; the Buhlers bought out Garden State Auto Park, located in Eatontown, New Jersey. The location is tight on Highway 36 and is so large that the Buhlers closed the Red Bank location, brought the Dodge dealership to Eatontown and along with Ford, Pontiac and Isuzu created what is today known as the Buhler Auto Superstore.

The dealership has customers who have been buying vehicles with Buhler Autos for the last 40 years, with many of them buying into the dealership itself, more than the product. It is the hardwork that is put into every deal, resulting in superior customer satisfaction that keeps customers coming back.

The combined dealerships have offered its customers quality products and service since it was formed as a Hudson Dealership 79 years ago. Hard work and attention to the customers needs have resulted in many awards of excellent equipment and facilities; have all contributed to the survival of four generations in this industry. Many a satisfied customer is out there driving with the Buhler name.
